Donald Gordon Creative Arts Awards 2011

Application deadline extended to MONDAY 15 NOVEMBER

Do you want to put on a film series? Host an exhibition? Present a discussion or lecture with another department? Stage a concert, or a performance? Do you need to rent a space, hire an assistant, work with a photographer or choreographer? The Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA) wants to support you.

We want to assist UCT staff members and graduate students from the sciences and the professional schools as well as the arts, in presenting creative and interdisciplinary projects and programmes to the public and the university community. In 2011 we will support projects, large and small, around the general heading of 'Hot Water', which could include explorations of climate change, political uncertainty, poverty, resource scarcity, and other imaginative responses to the topic. These projects will be presented at the Hot Water Festival in September 2011, but we also ask that they result in an exhibition, production, or series of public events in the course of the year. Send us a proposal, and a rough budget, and help us to help you.

The University of Cape Town has issued a call for proposals for Creative Arts Fellowships, to be taken under the auspices of the Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA). This is the third year that the fellowships, made possible by a generous donation from Sir Donald Gordon, will be offered. GIPCA is an innovative institution at UCT promoting new interdisciplinary creative research in the disciplines of Music, Dance, Fine Art, Drama, Creative Writing, Film and New Media, and in particular collaborations among disciplines. Interdisciplinarity is a key theme of the institute, defined here as consisting of two or more disciplines, with at least one being a participating GIPCA department at UCT. Projects should be created specifically for development in our institute.

Applications should be made by individuals who graduated after 2004 with master’s degrees or an equivalent in any discipline in the performing and creative arts. All applicants must be able to show currency in their fields. Fellows will work full-time in the departments of their choice (most likely the department from which they graduated) and be involved in the creative research life of university staff and students. Each year-long fellowship must culminate in a creative project of the fellow’s design. At least four fellowships are available of R120 000 each, and some provision will be made for material expenses where possible.

Application requirements:
* All applicants should submit a proposal, including details of their postgraduate degree, the project they wish to undertake, and the form in which they will realise it. The proposal must clearly indicate the interdisciplinary nature of the project.
* All applicants should indicate their proposed area of contribution to the host department. This requires some awareness of departments’ teaching, studio and postgraduate programmes.
* Three referees familiar with the applicant’s work should be asked to email referee reports directly to fin-gipca@uct.ac.za before the due date.
* For publicity purposes, please include: an abstract of the proposal (max. 250 words); a 1-2 page curriculum vitae including significant awards, publications, showings, educational background, and artistic profile; and one high-resolution head-shot (min.1 jpeg).
* Short detailed budget.
* All projects must be completed and ready for public showing by 1 February 2012.
All applications should be e-mailed to fin-gipca@uct.ac.za. Additional materials may be delivered to GIPCA Office, Hiddingh Hall, University of Cape Town, Hiddingh Campus, 31 Orange Street, Cape Town. Applications will be judged by a selection committee.
Deadline for applications: 3 September 2010. Notification of results: 3 October 2010.
Fellowship starting date: 1 February 2011. Please note that dates apply to all applicants.
